Reinforcing a Historic Dormitory Using a Concrete Retaining Wall Design

Overview

Renovation of this Harvard University residence hall in Cambridge, MA required a careful concrete retaining wall design so as to ensure the three-story dormitory building remained safe and standing. Built in the 1920's, this residential facility containing 104 apartments required a major facelift.

Summit Engineering assisted Davis Square Architects with the life-safety upgrade/renovation of this three-story timber, masonry and steel framed dormitory building Among the most notable of upgrades included the removal of the first floor bearing walls and installation of reinforced concrete exterior ramps and retaining walls. A limited construction and design schedule required that all work be completed during the summer break and ready for fall semester occupancy.
