Bournewood Psychiatric Hospital — Brookline, MA

Institutional Building Design Using Cold-Formed Steel Framing

The institutional building design of this 20,000-SF psychiatric care facility allowed for enough room for 30-beds to fit all underneath a single story structure. The facility, which opened up in 2013 and was built on the hospital’s current 12-acre Brookline campus, is named after the late Dr. Nasir A. Khan, former chairman and CEO for Bournewood Hospital, whose vision was to create a new building with state-of-the-art design elements and security features.

Summit provided the structural design for this modern adult intensive inpatient treatment unit. While the institutional building design will initially be a single story structure with a full walkout basement, there are provisions for the addition of two supplementary floor levels. The project was designed utilizing cold-formed steel framing for the walls, floors and lateral system. In addition to Summit, this project received a helping hand from GMI Architects
