The Outlet Mall of Kittery located along Route One in Kittery, Maine required a major restoration effort focused on exterior façade design and overall building improvement. As one of the smaller store clusters featured throughout the Kittery Outlets, the original design of the shopping mall was lacking in design and quality architecture. But that all changed in 2010, when the popular retail facility underwent a major restoration project. Today, the busy plaza is home to a Cape Cod Crafters Outlet, Sox Market, Luggage Loft and Casual Male XL.
Summit Engineering provided its engineering services for this major retail rehabilitation. The building owner requested Summit help with the constructability and impact of proposed building improvements. The original façade design was going to require downtime in the existing retail stores as well as negative visual impacts to the façade. Summit’s approach used cantilevered construction techniques and column reinforcing. This resulted in virtually no downtime for the tenants, less visual impact to the façade design, and lower overall construction costs.
